Three persons died and another critically injured when a Tata sumo travelling from Guwahati to Aizawl, Mizoram veered off the road and fell into a 200-feet gorge in Ratacherra along the National Highway 6 in East Jaintia Hills district today.
The troops from 172 Battalion of the BSF launched a rescue operation, pulling out the victims from the vehicle.
The deceased are the driver of the vehicle, Nasim Ahmed Choudhury (25) of Sonabarighat part II, Silchar, Zothanpari (51) of Tithing, Aizwal and Jenny Lalrinthangi (33) of Thinghlun (Lushaicherra), Mizoram.
Another female passenger, whose name is yet to be known, has been shifted to Silchar Civil Hospital.
While police said that the investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, people have blamed the atrocious conditions of the national highway which is currently undergoing repairs.
