In a joint operation between the 181st Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) and state police yesterday, three vehicles loaded with a huge quantity of sugar meant to be smuggled over the international border into Bangladesh were seized near the Gasuapara border area in South Garo Hills.
Three Indian nationals were also arrested on suspicion of smuggling.
Based on specific information, the BSF and police planned a special operation and set up a mobile check post (MCP) near Gasuapara where they intercepted the three vehicles loaded with more than 70 tonnes of sugar.
Upon questioning, all three drivers failed to produce valid documents regarding their consignments. The seized items and apprehended persons were then taken to Gasuapara police station for further legal action.
Between January and March, BSF personnel seized approximately 1,188 tonnes of sugar before it could be smuggled into Bangladesh, a BSF press release stated today.
