Twenty-two important public buildings are undergoing renovation to enhance accessibility to persons with disabilities in the state.
This is being done under the Accessibility Campaign initiated by the office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities to reshape and find transformative solutions for disability inclusion.
Notable structures including the main and official secretariat buildings, high courts, deputy commissioner’s offices, hospitals, educational institutions, and more have been revamped to feature crucial accessibility provisions.
These renovations include the installation of ramps, lifts, accessible toilets, signage, modified entrances, reception areas, and provision of accessible drinking water.
Deputy Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Bridget Warshong informed that the campaign’s initial phase targeted 60 pivotal public buildings in collaboration with relevant departments with the support from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.
Warshong said under phase two of the campaign, the office plans to include 15 more buildings within the capital with the education, police and agriculture departments to make their premises more accessible.
Under phase three, the office has also identified an additional 61 state-owned buildings across all districts for accessibility modifications and Warshong said they are seeking comprehensive support from the state government to ensure its success.
She said the office also wishes to extend the campaign to private establishments in partnership with MUDA and Urban Affairs in the future.
“The ongoing endeavors signify a dedicated effort towards creating a more inclusive environment for persons with disabilities, aligning with national directives and upholding the fundamental rights of this segment of society.
The proactive collaborations and progressive measures undertaken thus far stand as a testament to the commitment to provide equitable opportunities and access for all individuals, irrespective of their abilities.
