The level of seizures made by authorities in the run-up to the February 27 election has been 20 times more than the last polls in 2018, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor has said.
“There were seizures worth Rs 71.77 crore in cash and kind till February 23 and narcotics have been the highest at Rs 32.65 crore. In 2018, we seized Rs 1.5 crore,” he informed.
Kharkongor said the massive seizures reflect the active performance of the enforcement.
On the show cause issued for violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), the CEO informed that a total of 10 notices were issued to candidates contesting the elections and individuals.
In East Khasi Hills, show causes were issued against NPP candidate Mohendro Rapsang and UDP’s Paul Lyngdoh for distribution of pressure cookers and other freebies and UDP candidate for Mawlai constituency, Process T Sawkmie for communal remarks.
In South West Garo Hills show causes were served to government servants allegedly seen in political gatherings and those involved in the Phulbari violence and one in Ri Bhoi.
