Two men suspected of being behind an armed robbery at the Ksehbilat branch of Meghalaya Rural Bank on September 16 have been arrested by police, it was informed today.
On that day, at around 5:30pm, two masked men barged into the branch at a time when only the branch manager was present and forced her to open the strong room. However, the robbers were not able to get into the vault due to the manager’s courage and presence of mind, which meant that the criminals were only able to get away with Rs 10,000 that they got from the manager herself. They also stole the digital video recorded (DVR) attached to the CCTV to avoid detection.
An FIR was lodged with police the following day and the authorities swung into action.
Following their hard work, a raid was conducted yesterday night at the house of one of the suspects in Pomlakrai, Mawtharia. In the raid, Heavy Jones Kurkalang (25) was arrested after admitting to the crime and the weapon he used for the robbery was recovered under his mattress. He also led the police to Shiningstar Wahlang (23), who was arrested from Wahkdait, Madanrting Block G. The DVR that was taken from the bank was recovered from a pond at Wahsnait.
Further investigations are ongoing.
