Right to Information (RTI) activist Disparsing Rani has found that two out of every three sanctioned posts in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) are vacant.
The total number of sanctioned posts at the MeECL is 3,376 but 2,320 are vacant, Rani said while questioning how the public utility is able to function.
“It is shocking to learn that the Power Department that generates maximum revenue has so many vacant posts,” Rani told reporters at a press conference.
Meanwhile, he accused the MeECL of giving electricity connections to residents of Them Ïewmawlong without following proper procedures.
He revealed that his RTI found that only 100 people received electricity connections out of the 342 households at Them Ïewmawlong (Harijan Colony).
Rani, however, said that there are no records of documents that applicants for connections need to submit in order to be connected to the grid.
“This means the MeECL has given electricity connection without documents or NOC (no-objection certificate) from the concerned authority,” he said.
