Shillong, Aug 18: Two Khasi villagers, Raju Kasar and Bikas Syngkor, were critically injured after being attacked by a mob of 25 to 30 men from a particular community at Kalakhal Khasi Punji under Kachudaram police station, Cachar district, Assam.
The violent attack occurred on August 15, when six villagers visited their betel leaf plantation site. The attackers, armed with daos, sharp weapons and locally made firearms, allegedly demanded that the villagers vacate the land immediately. Upon refusal, they launched a brutal assault.
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) unit in Barak Valley has condemned the attack and demanded immediate action against the culprits. In a letter to the district authorities, KSU president Walton Rymbai stated that the attackers have been involved in various criminal activities, including theft, drug smuggling and timber smuggling.
The injured villagers are currently receiving treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. The KSU has expressed concern over the safety of the villagers, particularly school-going girls, who the pressure group said have been threatened with dire consequences.
“It is to bring to your attention that the above-mentioned culprits and 25 to 30 others have also warned our people with dire consequences that very soon they will burn down the village and also threaten to catch our school-going girls and rape them,” Rymbai stated in the letter to the district authorities.
The KSU has urged the authorities to take speedy action to avoid any further untoward incidents and ensure the peace and safety of the people. An FIR has been filed by Sibil Suchiang, wife of victim Raju Kasar, at Kachudaram police station.
