Police in East Garo Hills have arrested two individuals suspected of trying to extort money in the name of a faction of the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA-R).
An FIR was registered at Rongjeng police station on March 18 to the effect that unknown miscreants claiming to be members of the GNLA had phoned the complainants since March 15 to demand money while issuing threats if their demand was not complied with.
Based on the FIR, police began a hunt and yesterday one Predickson N Sangma (32), alias Ara, was apprehended while on his way to meet the complainants for the money. The arrest was made in Rongjeng Forest Reserve, Superintendent of Police Stephen A Rynjah informed today.
Based on their continuous operations, another member of the group, identified as Setbingstar D Shira (33), was apprehended from Rongjeng Songma.
Further searches have been initiated to nab remaining members of the supposed GNLA cell.
Rynjah requested members of the public to inform the police of similarly illegal activities to their local police station. This can be done confidentially and anonymously.
