Nineteen students with disabilities from the State were awarded with higher education scholarship by Indus Towers in collaboration with Shishu Sarothi.
An induction session was held yesterday at the Bethany Society, Shillong for the students to orient them about the methodology of claims and mode of scholarship disbursement.
Indus Tower has offered 120 students with disabilities from North East region as part of Indus’ Corporate Social Responsibility Program.
Rajender Gurung, Circle CEO-NESA Indus Towers said that the company believes in taking active role and responsibility in transforming the lives of communities. He said it has adopted a multi-fold approach for CSR, inclusive education being one of the important elements while promoting education programs.
He stated that the scholarship program with Shishu Sarothi offers a ray of hope to those waiting to emerge from the margins of the society and prove their worth in the world.
Launched in 2016 the scholarship programme is aimed to encourage and support students with disability. So far the scholarship has supported 316 students from across the Northeast pursuing higher education.
The selected students are provided support towards their educational fees till the completion of their course, and a few are also being granted additional assistance towards study materials/ assistive devices/hostel/conveyance.
Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Linda J Sangma who attended the programme as the chief guest lauded the Indus Towers and thanked Shishu Sarothi and Bethany Society for the seamless implementation.
She has also encouraged the students to put their focus and shared valuable insights on this initiative.
Deiborki Passah, Area Operation Manager Indus Towers Ltd. of Meghalaya, Seema Jangid, Project Coordinator Indus Towers Scholarship Program, Carmo Noronha, Executive Director of Bethany Society and other members were also present.
