The Urban Affairs Department will develop 18 roads in the city as ‘smart roads’ besides beautification of twelve junctions at an estimated cost of Rs. 134.50 crore. Already, the department has invited bids for the project.
The 18 roads have a total road length of 10,185 kilometres. They included Jail Road, Bivar Road, Keating Road, Don Bosco Road, Hopkinson’s Road, Road from Laitumkhrah Parking to Shillong Café on Don Bosco Road, Laitumkhrah Market to Fire Brigade via Beat House, Secretariat Hill Road, Road Passing by the side of Income Tax Office, Short Round Road, Long Round Road, Polo Road, Jacob’s Lane, Bomfyle Road, Street connecting Keating Road and GS Road, Upper Lachumiere Road, Camels Back Road (From BSNL Oakland Guest House to Wards Lake), Rhino Point to Last Stop Market.
The twelve junctions identified for beautification included Barik Junction, Civil Hospital Junction, IGP Point Junction, DC Office Junction, Pine Wood Junction, Police Bazar Roundabout, Governor’s House Junction, All Saints Cathedral Junction, Dhankheti Junction, Don Bosco Square Junction, Fire Brigade Junction and Polo Junction.
The overall scope of work has been divided into two parts, namely civil works and electrical works.
Civil works include retrofitting of the identified existing roads to develop them into “Smart Roads”, such as road pavement (carriageway); bus bays; junction improvement works; protected footpaths/pedestrian walkways; pedestrian plazas; street furniture; road markings; road signages; utility ducts for various utilities such as water supply, power distribution system; communication (telephone and Optical Fiber Cables); landscaping works; storm water drainage including culverts, etc.
Electrical works include all works related to Compact Sub-Stations (CSS) or other type of transformers; Ring Main Units (RMU); Compact Feeder Pillars; HT, LT (overhead or underground) and installation of external fire hydrants across all the road stretches identified to be developed as ‘Smart Roads’.
