Nongpoh, Mar 17: A powerful storm lashed several parts of Ri-Bhoi on Tuesday, causing widespread damage to homes and property. Many houses were partially or completely damaged, while some were crushed by fallen trees during the intense winds.
Following the storm and the subsequent power outage across the district, Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal convened an emergency meeting with officials, including Block Development Officers (BDOs), to ensure immediate relief measures for affected families. Relief materials such as tarpaulins and essential food supplies are being distributed on priority.
Speaking to the media, the DC stated that a total of 147 villages were affected by the storm that struck overnight. More than 1,000 households have suffered damage, with many homes severely affected while others sustained partial damage.
The storm also disrupted electricity supply in the district. Key power infrastructure, including the 132 KV lines at Byrnihat and Umiam and the 33 KV line at Nongpoh, were impacted. The district administration has directed the Power Department to expedite repair work and restore electricity at the earliest.
Baranwal has instructed BDOs to visit the affected villages, assess the damage and ensure that relief reaches all those in need. Immediate assistance, including food supplies, tarpaulins and other essentials, has already been dispatched to several affected families. However, financial compensation may take some time to process.
He also urged families who have not yet received assistance to report to the DC’s office so that necessary help can be provided without delay.
Baranwal also appealed to residents of the district to remain cautious in view of the prevailing weather conditions. People have been advised to avoid vulnerable areas and stay indoors during heavy rain or strong winds to ensure their safety.
