Showing how quickly the game of cricket is taking over the youth of Garo Hills, more than 140 children, between the ages of 6-18 years joined the newly inaugurated cricket academy in Salpara, Mendipathar in North Garo Hills.
The academy, which was inaugurated by the deputy commissioner of NGH, RP Marak, will be run by the NGH District Cricket Association. Training will be provided by BCCI ‘O’ level coach, Sooraj Rabha with assistant coach, Chingseng Marak helping the children.
The Academy is looking to help budding cricketers (boys and girls) with better understanding of the game and how best to train in the sport.
“Meghalaya has seen a surge in cricket due to the success of local players. We have tried to provide a platform for budding cricketers to get trained and take on the sport. We are hopeful of producing some great future cricketers who we hope will represent the state as well as the country,” said Bacheng Marak, the NGHDCA vice president.
Also present during the inauguration today was the NGHDCA president, Sengnap Momin along with other members of the association. The cricket academy is also the first in the district.
