Fourteen owners of stone crusher units and stone quarries in Ri Bhoi district are directed to appear before the Deputy Commissioner’s office for imposition of the environmental compensation, after their addresses could not be traced.
Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner, RM Kurbah said that various notices was served to the persons after the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board had issued a notice for imposition of environmental compensation as per the order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on illegal stone crusher units and stone quarries located in the district.
“Various notices were served to them to come and collect the letter/notice from the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Revenue Branch (Room No. 121) during office hours w.e.f. 19th August 2021 to 26th August, 2021 as their address could not be traced,” the Deputy Commissioner said.
The persons are Mati Nongrum, Martina Tariang, Concord L.T, Jyoti Agarwal of Killing village, Shyamlal, Rajesh Agarwal, Giri Mohanta, Dinesh Sharma, Anchu Agarwal of Umtyrnga Chibra village, Tanmay Bordoloi and Anu Basumatri, Halodor Dolloi, Pappu Agarwal (Dinesh Agarwal) of Barapathar village and Niraj Agarwala of Maikhuli village.
The Deputy Commissioner warned that failure to comply with the directive will attract legal action against their unit/quarry.
It may be mentioned that the NGT that it has imposed a fine of Rs 153 crore on 133 illegal stone quarries, crushers, and mining units in the State.
In the first week of August, the NGT, Eastern Zone has asked the Meghalaya government to file an affidavit within two months on the action taken against the illegal stone miners and stone crushers in Meghalaya.
