With the day-by-day destruction of the environment, Raid Nongkharai focused on green issues in its 12th Durbar, which was held on Saturday.
The annual event drew together 15 villages and was held at Jyntru to discuss issues concerning the people of Raid Nongkharai, which falls under Hima Khad-ar Lyngdoh, Elaka Nongpoh.
Speaking to reporters after the Durbar, the traditional head of Raid Nongkharai, Moses Syngkli, informed that discussions dwelt mainly on the preservation of the identity and culture of the people.
The Durbar had unanimously taken the decision to restrict the selling of land within Raid Nongkharai to outsiders with an aim to thereby control rampant population growth; it was accepted that limited land resources could not cope with a continued boom in population.
The Durbar also took a decision to protect the environment by strictly prohibiting the poisoning of aquatic life, burning of forests or other rampant destruction of the environment.
