Till recently, the term ‘career’ was linked with a handful of blue collar jobs. If you weren’t a doctor, engineer, and lawyer or you weren’t a govt employee etc, it was considered you didn’t have a career. Those daring to venture into uncharted territories were labelled as ‘Black Sheeps’.
But thanks to technology and internet penetration, what was amiss until a decade ago or didn’t even exist till recent memory is now the hottest career prospect. For the Gen-Y it is new choices, new gadgets, new learning and therefore new career options.
So here’s presenting a mix of newest, popular and trending career options the world has to offer right now:
- Culinary Arts (Chef): Culinary arts, in which culinary means “related to cooking”, is the art of preparation, cooking, and presentation of food, usually in the form of meals. If food and cooking is your passion, then this is the career for you. Some top culinary careers are: personal chef, restaurant manager, head chef/cook, pastry chef, executive chef etc.
- Ethical Hacking: An ethical hacker is an information security expert who systematically attempts to penetrate the computer system, network, app etc. at the behest of its owners to find security vulnerabilities that a malicious hacker could potentially exploit. Many multinationals employ ethical hackers to protect the organizations sensitive and confidential information.
- Drop-shipping: Drop-shipping is immensely useful in an e-retail business. A drop-shipper does not keep goods in stock but instead transfers the customer orders and shipment details to either the manufacturer, another retailer, or a wholesaler, who then ships the goods directly to the customer. With E-commerce giants like Flipkart, Amazon changing the way we shop, drop-shippers are in high demand nowadays.
- Wedding Photography: Through photographs, memories last a lifetime. Gone are the days, when the guests wished the couple and stared blankly into oblivion while the photographer clicked photos. Now is the age of candid photography, themed wedding photography and with weddings getting extravagant wedding photographers are in high demand.
- Reviewers: You have an opinion, you share it and get paid for it. Many companies, especially the online ones, pay people to review restaurants, hotels, gadgets and other things in social media. If you happen to ask the next-gen kids what they want to be when they grow up, chances are high they would say Youtuber or Reviewer instead of an Astronaut or Doctor.
- Blogging: What started out as a hobby for many is now a full-fledged career option. If you have a flair for writing then this might be the career for you. Start a blog on a subject of your choice and expertise. You can also add videos or short films to prove your point. It is a new way to provide information and entertainment for the viewers. Thus blogging is another career option where one can create relevant content and influence the Indian readers with their views.
- Standup Comedy: Since childhood we all grew up on a healthy dose of comedy shows like MTV Bakra, The Great Indian Laughter Challenge etc. If you too got a knack for cracking witty jokes and make people roll with laughter, then this is it for you. Currently many podcasts and videos of comedians like Kunal Kamra, Sorabh Pant etc have gone viral on YouTube. Who knows the next might be yours. One can perform at any medium and earn a good sum of money for each show. Now this is a lucrative new age career option you can think about.
- Tea Taster (Sommelier): What can be better than tasting tea while getting paid for it? You can earn a high salary with the right opportunity. A tea sommelier not only tastes the tea but also gives advice, does branding, and has a good knowledge of cultivation and manufacturing.
- Pet Grooming: This will be a dream job for those who love pets. And if you think luxury treatments are only for humans, think again. Pets today are given best of the luxury treatments like manicure, pedicure etc. Pet grooming is a huge craze in the west and is fast picking up in India.
- Wine Taster (Sommelier): To those passionate about wines. Like tea sommeliers, wine tasters try different varieties of wine and get paid for it. A sommelier is expect to possess deep and comprehensive knowledge on wine and is often sought after by restaurants for advice on various wine and food combinations.
