Two people died and a teenage girl received severe injuries after they were attacked by a man armed with a sharp weapon today morning in Sabuda, Ri-Bhoi.
The deceased were identified as Dribon Mukhim (47) and Rilan Mukhim (49). While Dribon died on the spot, Rilan succumbed to his wounds while being treated in NEIGRIHMS. Dribon’s body underwent an autopsy at Nongpoh Civil Hospital.
The incident occurred at around 10:30am and the suspected perpetrator was a relative of the victims. He is said to be suffering from a mental illness, according to sources.
Mawlasnai police took the suspect into custody and, due to his mental illness, he was taken to Shillong Civil Hospital. He had been detained by his relatives after the attack.
Meanwhile, sources also informed that Assam police had tried to interfere in the case; Sabuda lies in the disputed area between Assam and Meghalaya and the police from the neighbouring state have an outpost there. However, a border magistrate from Ri-Bhoi intervened and the case has been handed over to Meghalaya police for investigation.
